Ayatollah Khomeini
Iranian leader who assumed control of the government following the 1979 revolution which overthrew the existing pro-Western government. Khomeini’s government was an Islamic Republic, which blended religious and political laws to impose a restrictive interpretation of Islam upon Iran’s citizens.
