Two more people died in revenge attacks, including one man who was burned alive when a crowd from the church went on the rampage.
There were no immediate claims of responsibility for the strike, in Kaduna city, but Boko Haram, Nigeria's Islamist militants, were suspected.
The group, which is fighting for strict Sharia law to be imposed in the country's north, carried out a similar attack on three churches in Kaduna in June.
The bomber yesterday drove his vehicle to the gates of St Rita's Church in the city, 140 miles north of the capital, Abuja, and detonated his explosives when guards refused him entry to the compound.
Christopher Oyebanji, a Kaduna businessman who was at the 9am service, described how the church building was badly damaged in the attack.
"There was a huge explosion from outside, I was lucky that I was near the door and I managed to escape, but the walls and the roof nearest the bomber fell down straight away," he said.
"I saw two people who were killed being carried out of the church. There were so many other people who were injured, with blood pouring from their wounds. It was so terrible."

May 24, 2013 04:39 PM
Remember last week, when Eric Holder insisted under oath that he had not personally been aware of any efforts by the DOJ to target journalists? And remember how he was busted yesterday for signing off on the criminal investigation of Fox News’ James Rosen? Guess what: it gets better. And by better, we mean much, […]![]()

Down and out in LA: Outgoing Mayor Villaraigosa tries hand at hitchhiking [photo]
May 24, 2013 02:40 PM
It’s come to this. As Twitchy reported, outgoing LA Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has seen better days. But, rather than keeping a low profile and trying to get back on track, he’s milking his desperation for laughs. Or something. We’re not really sure. Take a look for yourself: Mayor who has no car hitching a ride […]![]()
Shorter David Axelrod: That Washington state bridge? The GOP collapsed that
May 24, 2013 02:03 PM
It took less than an hour for breathless libs to find a pitifully stupid way to blame the GOP for the Washington state bridge collapse. Obama henchman David Axelrod is a little slow, but half a day later, he is so on it. Collapse of bridge in WA underscores urgent need for infrastructure investments. Will latest […]![]()
