Ground Zero Mosque: Is There Any Decency "Left"?

The sun rose over Ground Zero this morning just as it did over Gettysburg, Pearl Harbor, Normandy Beach, and many other sites rendered sacred by the spilling of American blood in the name of freedom. Despite that similarity, there are profound distinctions between these sites. The blood spilled at Gettysburg helped preserve the Union while that spilled at Normandy assisted in stopping tyranny. While both Pearl Harbor and Ground Zero saw brazen, cowardly and fiendish attacks upon unsuspecting victims not engaged in war, the targets at Ground Zero were mostly civilians engaged in meetings, phone calls, and cups of coffee at the start of one of the darkest sunny days America has ever seen.
The Left might go as far as admitting that Ground Zero is special, but getting them to openly admit that Americans were murdered there in cold blood by fanatical Islamic terrorists acting in the name of religious intolerance, hatred of America, and a desire to take over our nation is, to quote the present occupant of The White House, a bit over their pay grade. Let us recall that these are the people who routinely react to serial killers, rapists, and others who trample on our laws with the sort of compassion and mercy they rarely direct toward their victims.
We have seen wealthy socialites puzzled by the lifestyles of regular Americans living paycheck to paycheck to survive. We have seen spoiled brats perplexed by the self-sacrifice of children raised to accept limitations and moderation. I am sure that we have even seen elitist, condescending academics mystified by struggling students. These fools are wrong, but their wrong is born of clueless arrogance and disconnection with those they demean and disrespect. How I wish that the source of the Left’s utter disregard for decency and respect at Ground Zero was born of mere stupidity, ignorance, or callousness. Alas, there is much more to this latest stumble by a political ideology no more capable of resisting the impulse to spill its nature on the proceedings than a drunk at a wedding.
Let us recall that we are dealing with people who can shove Christianity under a rock with one hand while preaching religious tolerance with the other, who can boast two corrupt leaders in Charles Rangel and Maxine Walters pointing fingers at others with one hand while grabbing unethical profits with the other, and who can provide Nancy Pelosi demanding an investigation into the sources of Ground Zero mosque opposition with one hand while ignoring the need for an investigation of the backgrounds of its suspicious backers with the other. Hypocrisy, selective indignation and arrogance may not only reside in the Left, but that is their main place of residence.
Non-Muslim supporters of this mosque like Obama and Bloomberg wave religious tolerance while we see no similar display of such tolerance by the Muslim world. Apparently we are supposed to be the beacons of tolerance to the world as long as that tolerance is directed at beliefs, events, and people the Left agrees with. The media is aghast to find that most Americans are against the Ground Zero mosque just as they are scandalized by the finding that most Americans think Obama is a Muslim. They dash to explain and correct both distortions with a combination of shock and patronizing dismay at the utter ignorance of those who cling to their arms and religion in the heartland. However, do not hold your breath waiting for this same media to ever consider why most Americans feel this way. Rather, in typical Leftist arrogance, they declare these views misguided and proceed to analyze what brain damage causes both.
Could it be that most Americans are against a Ground Zero mosque because it is a slap in the face to the memory of those who died there? Might the reason most Americans think that Obama is a Muslim stem from the fact that they see him defending, praising, justifying, and favoring this religion over all others, especially Christianity, and even over a basic respect for American patriotic values? It appears that the MSM still has not stepped down from its pedestal long enough to realize that average Americans routinely display the kind of basic common sense and decency that the Left and their pet media regularly ignore, mock, or feign.
This is not about religious intolerance. This mosque has the right to be built somewhere in Manhattan in a nation which prides itself with rising above ingrates like Chavez and others who mock, criticize, and preach to the greatest nation this world has ever seen. The nation which is the embodiment of freedom and tolerance needs to tolerate the intolerant, but not at the expense of decency and respect for its own. We have the right to dance, but not on the graves of our heroes. We have the right to express our views, but not at the expense of the souls that died to give us that right. We have the right, the duty, to teach our young people the importance of our freedoms, but not at the expense of basic human decency and respect for innocent blood.
Ground Zero today has become the Ground Zero for the fight to preserve whatever shreds of civility, common sense, decency and respect are left in this country. If something positive can rise from the smoke of this latest attack on what our nation stands for, it may very well be yet another realization and collective awakening by Americans from the latest drunken stupor perpetuated by the Left. How ironic it would be if this sacred burial ground would become the place where this Leftist regime met its political doom.
