State and Local Update:

Los Angeles Times: Immigration, Leave it to the Feds California has so far managed to avoid the mistake made by Alabama, Arizona and other states that have sought to enact local immigration laws even though that is an area that is rightly the responsibility of the federal government. But that may soon change.

The Republic: Ala. Immigration Law Opponents Say They Want to See New Law Repealed Rather than Changed  Leaders of groups representing immigrants want to see Alabama's toughest-in-the-nation immigration law repealed rather than the Legislature changing the law.  Leaders of the Alabama Coalition for Immigrant Justice said at a telephone press conference Tuesday that they do not support a bill aimed at correcting problems with the immigration bill.

Fox News Latino: Undocumented Immigrants in New York Demand Action on State DREAM Act A group of young people set out on a march Monday from New York City to the state capital of Albany to demand the enactment before June of the DREAM Act, a bill that would grant economic aid to undocumented college students. 3 Businesses Complete ICE Training Program Three Gulf Coast businesses have completed training to strengthen hiring practices regarding illegal immigrants.

Fox News Latino: Alberto R. Gonzales, Fairness and Justice for Immigrant Children -A Proposal In an earlier column, I asked what should be our policy with respect to immigrant children unlawfully brought to this country and raised here by their parents.  My sense of fairness tells me we should not penalize these children for the sins of their parents. However, my sense of justice tells me that we do not want the parents to benefit from those very sins.

My San Antonio: Castro says Republican compromise on DREAM Act Won't Cut It San Antonio Mayor Julián Castro warned Wednesday that a Republican-proposed DREAM Act without a path to citizenship for children brought to this country illegally was akin to "cotton candy politics."

Border Enforcement:

The Citizen: Those Most Harmed by Illegal Immigration Are the U.S.'s Poor Jeanie Fusaro's response to my commentary on immigration is correct: I am a racist. That's usually the first thing thrown out when anyone disagrees with pointing out the illegal immigration problem.  Now that we have established that, maybe we can talk about facts and my opinion piece.  I wrote the letter from the perspective of someone who has been to the border many times, and seen first-hand the damaged caused by illegal immigration.

Fox News Latino: U.S. Counters Cartels by Buying Newspaper Ad Space The ICE ads that began appearing Sunday in classified sections of Tijuana's Frontera and El Mexicano are nothing fancy. Bold black letters say, "Warning! Drug traffickers are announcing jobs for drivers to go to the United States. Don't fall victim to this trap."

Reuters: U.S. Border Agent Accused of Gun Smuggling Ordered Detained A U.S. Border Patrol agent, accused of buying guns in the United States and smuggling them to Mexico for use by drug cartels, must remain in jail pending a detention hearing later this week, a U.S. Magistrate Judge ruled on Tuesday.

The Fence Post: Local employers hope Ag Committee votes down work eligibility program Weld County producers who have recently dealt with thousands of dollars in lost agriculture production due to worker shortages say more stringent immigration laws are not the answer to the problem.  And they're hoping that message resonates with House Agriculture Committee members, who will vote in the near future on a proposed bill that would require all Colorado employers, including farms, to use the national E-Verify system.

Columbia Spectator: Vargas Talks Immigration, Border Control Urging his audience to rethink what defines the modern American, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Jose Antonio Vargas discussed solutions to immigration problems at the Columbia Law School Tuesday.

One News Now: Romney Likely Best Since ‘Ike' on Illegal Immigration The head of an organization that advocates for reduced immigration believes Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney would be far better than recent presidents in dealing with the daunting problem of illegal immigration.
