U.S. Government Agency Accused of Islamophobia

by THE GLOBAL MUSLIM BROTHERHOOD DAILY REPORT November 3, 2011

European media is reporting that the newly formed Syrian opposition group known as the Syrian National Council met recently with Global Muslim Brotherhood leader Youssef Qaradawi. According to an Italian news agency report:

BEIRUT, OCTOBER 24 – The preliminary meeting of the commission of Arab League ministers, which has been tasked with holding talks with the Syrian authorities in Damascus on Wednesday, is to take place in the Qatari capital Doha tomorrow. Wednesday’s talks will centre on the proposal to hold a dialogue conference in Cairo before October 30 and aimed at putting an end to the bloody crackdown continuing in Syria. The deputy secretary of the Arab League, Ahmad Ben Halli, was quoted by the London-based pan-Arab newspaper Al Hayat as saying that the preparatory meeting of ministers will be held in Doha tomorrow ahead of Wednesday’s talks with the Syrian authorities. The commission hastily formed to deal with the Syrian issue is made up of the Foreign Ministers of Qatar, Algeria, Egypt, Oman and Sudan. The newspaper also says that Burhan Ghalioun, the president of the Syrian National Council (SNC), the main opposition platform both in Syria and abroad, and two of its other officials, Nibras Fadel and Yassin Najjar, have been in Doha since yesterday. The SNC delegation, which is accompanied by Sheikh Mustafa Sayrafi, a member of the world council of Muslim Ulamas, and Majd Makki, a member of the general council of the league of Syrian Ulamas, was received in Doha yesterday by the Sunni Sheikh, Yusuf Qaradawi, who is close to the pan-Arab television station Al Jazeera, which in turn is controlled by the Emir of Qatar. (ANSAmed).

A previous post reported that Dr. Najib Ghadban, a member of the Syrian National Council (SNC) had appeared at an event co-sponsored by the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), a part of the U.S. Muslim Brotherhood. In 2007, the Wall Street Journal report identified Najib Ghadbian as the point of contact between White House officials and the National Salvation Front, a newly formed Syrian opposition coalition at that time, and as an advocate for a U.S. relationship with the Syrian Brotherhood. Another post reported that  U.S. Muslim Brotherhood leader Louay Safi was a leading member of the SNC.

Qaradawi, a virulent anti-Semite is often referred to here as the most important leader of the global Muslim Brotherhood, an acknowledgement of his role as the de facto spiritual leader of the movement. In 2004, Qaradawi turned down the offer to lead the Egyptian Brotherhood after the death of the Supreme Guide. Based in Qatar, Sheikh Qaradawi has reportedly amassed substantial wealth through his role as Shari’ah adviser to many important Islamic banks and funds. He is also considered to be the “spiritual guide” for Hamas and his fatwas in support of suicide bombings against Israeli citizens were instrumental in the development of the phenomenon. A recent post has discussed a video compilation of Qaradawi’s extremist statements.

An earlier post reported on a fatwa (Islamic ruling) signed by Qaradawi that called the Syrian regime of Bashar Al-Assad “heretical.”

U.S. media is reporting that a northern Virginia man is suing a U.S. intelligence agency alleging that it revoked his security clearance because his wife attended the Islamic Saudi Academy and works for Islamic Relief USA. According to a Washington Post report:

A Northern Virginia man is suing one of the nation’s most secretive intelligence agencies, claiming it revoked his security clearance because his wife attended an Islamic school and works for a Muslim nonprofit. Mahmoud M. Hegab, 30, hired las year as a budget analyst for the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, filed the discrimination lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Alexandria last month. In court papers, Hegab, who lives in Alexandria, said he joined the agency in January 2010 and told officials during his orientation that he had gotten married to Bushra Nusairat, 24, between the time of his security clearance investigation and the date he reported to work. Mahmoud M. Hegab is suing the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, claiming anti-Muslim bias. The NGA supplies satellite imagery to the military and requires its 16,000 workers to obtain a top secret security clearance as a condition of employment. But the agency revoked Hegab’s clearance in November 2010, citing concerns about Nusairat’s background. Hegab was placed on unpaid leave in January. Nusairat is a program associate with Islamic Relief USA, a global nonprofit that provides food aid and public health and educational programs in poor or disaster-prone regions and whose director advises the U.S. Agency for International Development at the State Department. Hegab’s attorney, Sheldon Cohen, argued in court papers that the decision to revoke his client’s clearance “was based solely” on his wife’s “religion, Islam, her constitutionally protected speech, and her association with, and employment by, an Islamic faith-based organization.”

A previous post reported that Islamic Relief USA (IRUSA) has a “collaborative partnership” with the USDA’s Center for Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships and that IRUSA has pledged to host 50 sites as part of a Michelle Obama initiative.

The IRUSA website identifies Dr. Yaser Haddara as a member of the IRUSA board since 2006 and its chairman until May 2011. According to his profile, Dr. Haddra has been active in the Muslim Society of America (MAS), the Islamic Society of North America, and the Muslim Association of Canada (MAC). Previous posts have discussed the relationship between Islamic Relief USA and the Tarek ibn Ziyad Academy, an Islamic charter school with strong connections to the Muslim American Society (MAS). The MAS was established in 1993 by leaders of the U.S. Muslim Brotherhood and a Hudson Institute report has discussed the relationship of the MAS to both the Egyptian and U.S. Muslim Brotherhood. The same Hudson report also identifies ISNA as an important part of the U.S. Muslim Brotherhood. Other posts have explored the Muslim Brotherhood ties of the MAC.

Islamic Relief Worldwide (IRW) is headquartered in the U.K. where one of its trustees listed in U.K. charity records is Ibrahim El-Zayat, a leader in both the European and the German Muslim Brotherhood. Mr. El-Zayat is also a trustee of the U.K. branch of Islamic Relief. Islamic Relief Worldwide is also listed as a company in the U.K where records indicate that Dr. Ahmed Al-Rawi, the former head of the Federation of islamic Organizations in Europe (FIOE) and President of the Muslim Association of Britain (MAB) has been a director at one time. Both FIOE and the MAB are part of the U.K. and European Muslim Brotherhood. Another former director of the company Islamic Relief Worldwide is Issam Al-Bashir who, as previous posts have discussed, is a former Minister of Religious Affairs in the Sudan and who has held numerous positions associated with the global Muslim Brotherhood. In a number of European countries, the local branch of Islamic Relief is also tied to the local Muslim Brotherhood organization.

In May 2006, the Israeli government announced the arrest of an IRW worker for activities related to supporting Hamas and said that IRW activities in the Palestinian territories ” are carried out by social welfare organizations controlled and staffed by Hamas operatives”:

The Israel Security Agency (ISA) and the Israel Police, on 10 May 2006, arrested Iyaz Ali, a Pakistani-born British national, born in 1970. He admitted to being a member of the UK-based Islamic Relief Worldwide (IRW), which is suspected of supporting Hamas. He admitted to working for IRW’s Gaza branch as a project director since December 2005; he worked to transfer funds and assistance to various Hamas institutions and organizations, including the Al Wafa and Al Tzalah associations, which have been outlawed in Israel. He also admitted that he worked in Jordan and cooperated with local Hamas operatives. Incriminating files were found on Ali’s computer, including documents that attested to the organization’s ties with illegal Hamas funds abroad (in the UK and in Saudi Arabia) and in Nablus. Also found were photographs of swastikas superimposed on IDF symbols, of senior Nazi German officials, of Osama Bin Laden and Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, as well as many photographs of Hamas military activities. The IRW was established in 1984 in the British city of Birmingham. It has branches in Gaza and Ramallah. The IRW provides support and assistance to Hamas’s infrastructure. The IRW’s activities in Judea, Samaria and the Gaza Strip are carried out by social welfare organizations controlled and staffed by Hamas operatives. The intensive activities of these associations are designed to further Hamas’s ideology among the Palestinian population. These associations’ educational and religious institutions incite against the State of Israel and advocate terrorist actions against it and its citizens. The associations provide support to the families of terrorists who were wounded in actions against Israel, and to Hamas prisoners and detainees. These associations thus promote Hamas’s goals including the destruction of the State of Israel. Ali admitted that he was aware that several of the organizations supported by the IRW in Judea, Samaria and Gaza were indeed identified with Hamas. By agreement, Ali was released today (Monday), 29 May 2006, with restrictions on his movements. He will be deported from Israel in the coming days and will be barred from returning.

It should be noted that according to a NEFA Foundation report, Islamic Relief was one of the founding members of the Union of Good, described as a “coalition of Islamic charities that provides financial support to both the Hamas ‘social’ infrastructure, as well as its terrorist activities.” The Union of Good is headed by global Muslim Brotherhood leader Youssef Qaradawi and most of the trustees and member organizations are associated with the global Muslim Brotherhood.

Right Side News has published a review of the Council on American-Islamic Relations’ (CAIR) position on the recent U.S. criminal complaint alleging an Iranian plot to assassinate the Saudi ambassador. The article begins:

OCTOBER 2011 00:00 IPT NEWS A criminal complaint issued last week alleging members of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps Quds Force plotted to kill the Saudi ambassador to the United States triggered bi-partisan outrage in Washington and international condemnation.

The plot, had it not been interdicted by federal law enforcement, was seen as a potential act of war on American soil by a hostile regime. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton labeled it an international act of terrorism.

But there has been an odd silence from America’s national Islamist organizations. None has issued a release on the case. And when officials from the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) have commented, they have criticized the government’s case and spoken in defense of the Iranian regime.

Executive directors Zahra Billoo of CAIR-San Francisco and Dawud Walid of CAIR-Michigan challenged the case’s legitimacy, calling out Attorney General Eric Holder and accusing the FBI of fabrication and entrapment. The plot unraveled when Mannsor Arbabsiar, a naturalized American citizen of Iranian descent, reached out to what he thought was a representative of the Zeta drug cartel to carry out the attack.

The representative really was a Drug Enforcement Agency informant who recorded Arbabsiar’s conversations. Arbabsiar is in custody, charged with conspiracies to murder a foreign official, to use a weapon of mass destruction, and conspiracy to commit an act of international terrorism transcending national boundaries.

Since then, CAIR-National has linked to an article on a leftist website from its Twitter account, posting the headline, “US Officials Peddle False Intel to Support Terror Plot Claims.”

An earlier post discussed an appearance by CAIR leaver Ibrahim Hooper on Iranian TV where he complained that “The rise of anti-Muslim sentiment in our society is being generated by a cottage industry of Muslim bashers and Islamophobic groups.” Another post discussed a previous appearance by Mr. Hooper on Iranian TV where he said that “we [CAIR] are the first defenders of the constitution.”

Documents released in the Holy Land Trial have revealed that the founders and current leaders of CAIR were part of the Palestine Committee of the Muslim Brotherhood as well as identifying the organization itself as being part of the US. Brotherhood. A recent post discussed an interview with the Deputy leader of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood in which he confirms a relationship between his organization and CAIR. Investigative research posted on GMBDR had determined that CAIR had it origins in the U.S. Hamas infrastructure and CAIR and it leaders have a long history of defending almost all individuals accused of terrorism by the US. government, frequently calling such prosecutions a “war on Islam.” In 2009, a US federal judge ruled “The Government has produced ample evidence to establish the associations of CAIR, ISNA and NAIT with HLF, the Islamic Association for Palestine (“IAP”), and with Hamas.

Egyptian media is reporting that mg leader Youssef Qaradawi has sent a letter to the Saudi Arabian king expressing his hope that Saudi Arabia give permission for women to drive cars. According to a report in Al-Masry Al-Youm:

Qaradawi’s official website said he has sent a letter to the king hailing his statements on the rights of Muslim women and his recent decision to allow women to put themselves forward for positions in the country’s municipalities and Consultative Assembly.   In his letter Qaradawi said, “As I send you my regards and express my happiness and appreciation for your statements and decisions, I hope that your dear country will allow Muslim women to drive cars in conformance with Islamic regulations, like other Muslim countries.”   Qaradawi added that both the Quran and tradition clearly outline prohibited practices, and that neither forbid women from driving.   The website said Qaradawi received a thank you letter from the king in response to his message.   Saudi Sheikh Abdul Rahman al-Barrak has called for sentencing women who drive to death, after several Saudi women began a movement on 17 June to call for allowing women to drive.   He described their cause as evil and said such women are “Westernized women seeking to westernize the country.”

Nice strawman, clearly designed to scare soccer moms by stoking fears about scary religious-right fanatics. In Saudi Arabia, use of birth control might be controversial. Here in the United States, by contrast, the Supreme Court ruled 47 years ago that use of birth control is a constitutional right. There is no serious effort afoot to overturn [...]
