Exclusive: Terrorists Forcing Abortions: Women and Gays Raped & Mutilated

Women are dying. In the towns and rural areas of Colombia, a terror group stalks females. It is common, in fact, for members of terror groups to be guilty of many perversions. I discuss this in my upcoming book Disturbed: Terrorist Behavioral Profiles and in my seminar Terrorist Behavioral Profiling. Having created the profiles of female serial killers, in depth profiles of sadists, and profiles of illegal immigrant sex offenders (featured in the 2006 U.S. Congressional Report “A Line in the Sand”), I sought to determine if there were behavior and personality patterns in terror groups. I can state unequivocally that there are patterns.

I have worked with police in the United States on hundreds of rapes, murders, serial murders, and sexual homicides. In sexual killings, perpetrators have linked sex and violence at a young age, and I see this in terrorists who engage in sexual perversion. In the terror groups I examined, I found that rape was quite common. There is a sense of entitlement to women who belong to groups as well as women who are considered to be the group’s enemies. Terror organizations can instill an all powerful feeling. It is self feeding, and the more power one gets, the more he wants. Thus, terrorists are always searching for ways to extend their reach.

In Colombia, the male dominated FARC is a Leftist group that came about when there was a widening gap between the “haves” and the “have nots.” The group was seen as a way to fight the corrupt regime that was taking all the money and resources and leaving the population as peasants. At first the FARC struck the government, which was seen as a legitimate target. But with time, as happens with all terror groups, this changed. The group began practicing Pesca Milagrosa. Translated, this means “miraculous fishing.” The group began raiding villages and kidnapping youths to serve in the FARC. Anyone could be a target, especially if traveling alone. FARC members would capture a victim, torture him, and perhaps ransom him. More recently, the group was said to have been trying to make a dirty bomb. The group’s attempts to acquire uranium were found when terror leader Raul Reyes was killed in early 2008. His computers showed this activity as well as alleged connections to Venezuela President Hugo Chavez and Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa (ALJAZEERA.NET, 2008; Reuters, 2008).

Because of the FARC’s feared reputation, the people were afraid. So, the group began imposing strict rules on members as well as citizens who fall prey to its control. In fact, like the Taliban, paramilitary groups in Colombia enforce strict dress codes. Women are to be covered up. Men must not grow their hair long. If anyone, especially a woman, breaks this dress code, she is severely punished. Sometimes the punishments include mutilation; other times, it is rape. Like radical Muslims, sometimes males will throw acid on females.

This all encompassing power leads to a twisted need to become more domineering. In Colombia, the FARC is immersed in sexual violence. The group uses rape and sodomy to control both members and outsiders. Even men are subject to rape if they get out of line. It is humiliating and meant to destroy the victims. Of note, the FARC is nearly 40% female. These women are often abducted and presented as sex slaves for FARC commanders. Though women can hold the title of Commandante, it is rare for a female to be a top level leader (McDermott, 2008).

For most females, their plight in the group is nothing short of misery. Some young girls join the terror group because they have been victims of sexual abuse, and in Colombian society, the female is blamed and shamed for the attack. She is not accepted in society if she has allowed herself to be raped. Such girls are seen as unclean and unwanted by males. This sexist attitude is pervasive.

Once in the group, unless the woman is brutal, angry, and able to physically beat the males (and this occasionally happens), she is relegated to subservient positions. This is the more common role. Females are used to perform domestic duties and serve their male superiors in every way. They are also expected to fight. Using women is viewed as a way to humiliate the enemy. That is, if the enemy is killed by a woman, it is seen as more damaging to the morale of the enemy. After all, what kind of man falls at the feet of a female warrior? Terror groups are adept at using psychological warfare, but within their ranks, they still succumb to animalistic tendencies. The unfortunate women in and outside the group are abused. Even worse, they are told they must not cry. If they do shed a tear, they can be raped. If they cry during the rape, they can be beaten, sexually mutilated, and then killed. This serves as a warning to other women.

But this sexual mutilation and assault is not limited to women and men who cross the group. Gays and lesbians are also targets because they break social norms. Being gay or lesbian can be a death sentence because it is considered unacceptable in Colombian society. In those cases,
homosexuality is punished through extreme cutting of the genitalia and sometimes death. More and more, a strict “moral” code and dress code are enforced. This is a strong warning sign. Whenever a group targets women for oppression, men will follow. Simply, a group looking to take over an area seeks to marginalize women first. Once the women are under control, it is easier to focus on the males.

The FARC truly terrorizes women. Because there is no desire for pregnancy, female victims are injected with contraception so they do not conceive during the rapes. Unfortunately, if the women become pregnant, they are forced to have abortions. There have been reports of terrorists cutting open the bellies of pregnant women to kill them and their babies. This has been done in front of an entire village. In one documented instance, a former female FARC member discussed having been given drugs to kill her fetus. Later, another group member used “pincers” to remove the dead child (O’Keefe, 2008). It should be noted that these atrocities occur without anesthetic.

Forced abortions are common when a female FARC breaks the rules and becomes pregnant. Discipline is important to this terrorist organization. Strict behavioral rules are meant to keep the group safe and prevent members from leaving. For example, besides the forced abortions, if a female tries to escape the group, she can be caught and tried before a tribunal before being executed. Furthermore, female FARC can only have sexual relationships with FARC males. These horrors occur with barely a mention around the world, and until good people stand up and say “no,” they will continue. There are no official numbers of forced abortions. But former FARC females have stated that abortions were routine, and there are thousands of young FARC women who are powerless to fight back.
