Obama Could Solve Immigration Disputes by Enforcing the Law

Border Security:

Times Free Press: Obama Could Solve State-federal Immigration Disputes by enforcing the Law You may have read that a federal court has blocked parts of Alabama's anti-illegal-immigration law while various lawsuits are pending.  Among other things, the court said Alabama cannot enforce a part of the law forbidding illegal aliens to conduct business with the state. We cannot imagine why a state should be conducting formal business dealings with people who have no right to be in this country.

Defense News: Despite Calls for Fencing-In the Border, U.S. Sticks with Surveillance and Comms on Southwest Borders A team of researchers from Princeton University calculates that the security of the border between the U.S. and Mexico is better than ever. But with more cameras being erected, and more aircraft and agents patrolling the border, U.S. analysts caution that intelligence sharing among agents and dispatchers must continue to improve if this trend is to continue. On top of that, doubters outside the Obama administration are yet to be convinced these high-tech solutions make more financial and strategic sense than attempting to block the entire border with fences.

Fast and Furious:

Free Republic: ATF Managers Lawyer Up, Slam Gun Laws and Still Deny Gunwalking The attorneys of Bill Newell, embattled former ATF Special Agent in Charge of the Phoenix Field Division, and David Voth, Supervisor of Phoenix Group VII (the group that carried out Operation Fast and Furious), are accusing Senator Charles Grassley and Chairman of the House Oversight Committee Darrell Issa of making “many inaccurate and harmful statements” and “factual distortions against” their clients.

State and Local Update:

New England Cable News: Kansas House Panel to Discuss Immigration Next Week A committee in the Kansas House expects to debate proposals next week for cracking down on illegal immigration.

Honolulu Star Adviser: Bill would Cut UH Fee for Illegal Immigrants State senators are supporting a bill that would allow Hawaii high school graduates without legal immigration status to get resident tuition at the University of Hawaii and be eligible for state-funded financial aid.

Washington Post:  Appeals Court Upholds Ban on Texas Town’s Law Barring Illegal Immigrants from Rental Housing A federal appeals court Wednesday upheld a lower court ruling that stopped a Dallas suburb’s ban on illegal immigrants seeking housing.  The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that Farmers Branch overstepped its authority in 2008 when it passed a law calling on the city’s building inspector to check the immigration status of anyone wanting to rent an apartment who wasn’t a U.S. citizen.

Topeka Capital-Journal: House Puts off E-Verify for State Workers The House sent back to committee Wednesday a bill that would mandate that the state and most of its contractors check the immigration status of new hires using a federal database.

Colorado Springs Gazette: Bill to Ensure Workers’ Citizenship Likely to Die, Sponsor Says A Republican bill to curb illegal immigration was likely killed Thursday at the hands of its own party, according to its sponsor.  Rep. Marsha Looper, R-Calhan, walked red-faced out of the committee that heard a bill of hers that would have required all employers to use the national E-Verify system. The committee had just voted 7-5 to send the measure to the House Agriculture Committee, with three Republicans supporting the move.

Birmingham Business Journal: Businesses Face E-Verify Deadline A federal court struck this month two additional sections of Alabama’s controversial immigration law, but left in place a critical deadline for state businesses.

Freemont Tribune.com: Appeals Filed on Illegal Immigration Ordinance Appeals have been filed on both sides following last month’s summary judgment on Fremont’s illegal immigration ordinance.

Judicial watch: Immigration Law Complicates Relations With Mexico Check out what a federal appellate court just determined when striking down a Texas town’s law banning illegal aliens from renting housing; the “unconstitutional” measure has no other purpose than the exclusion of illegal aliens, which complicates immigration issues and relations with other countries, particularly Mexico.

DREAM Act:

CBS 5 Phoenix, AZ: DREAM Act Protesters Released from ICE The four adults arrested Tuesday were placed on 24- to 48-hour holds Wednesday during their initial court appearances. They all pleaded not guilty.

The Hill: Republicans Seeking Out Hispanics Senate Republicans want to alter DREAM Act legislation to steal away Hispanic voters from Democrats.  Sen. Marco Rubio (Fla.), the only Senate Republican of Hispanic heritage and a possible vice presidential pick, is working on an alternative version of the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act, which would grant legal status to illegal immigrants who came to the country at a young age and serve in the military or attend college.

E-Verify:

Numbers USA: Another Reason Amnesty Advocates Fear H.R. 2885 Amnesty advocates like Rep. Luis Gutierrez (IL) believe that an unauthorized alien's history of illegally taking and holding jobs that should have gone to citizens or legal aliens should be viewed as evidence of "good character." Much of the mainstream media has agreed. According to that twisted logic, the more jobs an unauthorized alien illegally works, the more compelling the case for amnesty. This is why the mass-amnesty lobby fears the Legal Workforce Act (H.R. 2885). The national mandatory E-Verify bill would make it much harder to establish long, illegal-work histories in the United States
