Exclusive: Women against Sarah Palin – Shrill, Shrill, Shrill
Ruth King
On a walk with a wise friend yesterday I came upon an old and dear friend and engaged in a friendly chat. Along the course of the conversation I allowed as how I was disappointed in the outcome of the election. The frost immediately descended. How could I, she asked in self righteous high dudgeon, have voted for “that woman.” She was shocked, shocked.
This comely and wealthy wife of a hedge fund manager, owner of a town house stacked floor to ceiling with priceless American crafts and antiques, keeper of a country estate on dozens of acres with a swimming pool, tennis court, guest barn and late model luxury SUVs in the garage, could not contain her utter disdain for “that woman.”
Not one to furrow her perpetually smooth brow with questions about national security, energy independence, a tanking economy propelled by the legislation of entrenched “redistributors” in Congress, or the dangers of sleeper cells of terrorists on our home turf, she practically stalked away scratching her expensive highlighted and coiffed head more annoyed by “that woman” than by any of Barack Obama’s rather dubious acquaintances and “just guys down the street” like Ayers and Khalidi.
What is it about “that woman” that elicits this response, I asked my companion as we continued our walk.
She explained that Palin is not in the mode of the elite. She did not attend one of the better schools, she is married to a snowmobile champ, she hunts, she wears consignment clothes (more about that later), she doesn’t spout feminist cant, and she does not worship at the temple of the climateers and she does not “do lunches” at tony cafes. Her kids have funny names. (Chelsea Clinton was named after a song for Pete’s sake.)
But the real reason they have this visceral contempt for her is that she has actually achieved all their aspirations. She is successful; she is beautiful; she is a governor; she has taken on the old boys; she has gained national stature; she has clout; she has a son in the military; and she has a husband who is a hunk who is also happy to help and do “home work” to help his wife’s career, and kids and a great family life along with its attendant problems. How dare she? Why she did not even go to Sarah Lawrence, not to mention Smith College. And, horror of horrors, she is a Republican. And even more unforgivable is that she is pro-life and chose to have, and love, and rear a Downs syndrome child, unlike the liberal icon playwright Arthur Miller who gave his Downs baby to a dreadful orphanage only two days after his birth and never saw him again. I told you my friend is really wise.
Nowhere was this outrageous trashing of Palin more obvious than on CNN. Campbell Brown could not hide her sneering every time Palin’s name came up. She dropped the ending of words, she was dumbfounded by Couric and Gibson, and she had the gall to wear designer clothes bought for her by the Republicans, Campbell and the other chicks clucked.
Well you know what? Wednesday night on her show, all the commentators were goin’ and doin’ and trashin’….just listen to them. And then, Ms. Brown asking about sniping within the party asked “Was this between she and the campaign staffers?”…I’m not kidding.
Was anyone talking about how Hillary Clinton who was so dowdy in the past (remember that plaid suit, dark hose and black hat at the first inaugural) came to be so soigné and coutured and bejeweled in trendy baubles? No. She is one of the sisters. She went to Wellesley and Yale.
What in the world is in their silly heads? Palin is the only candidate who brought up Islam’s “honor killings” of innocent women. She is the only one who made the most powerful case for energy independence, long before McCain talked about the need for nuclear energy. As a commander in chief of Alaska’s National Guard, which is the largest unit in America, she must be prepared and informed about national emergencies and potential threats. As governor of our largest state, Palin embarked on a pipeline which could be America’s energy lifeline. Palin is a quick study who could easily face down dictators and enemies every bit as well as Barack Obama and with a lot of preconditions.
Most important of all, Sarah Palin did not whine or parade her grievances as a “victim”….and she was sorely treated by being leashed even as she was being unjustly pilloried.
She gave as good as she got and that’s what is driving the girls in the liberal band crazy.
We have not seen the last of her.
