Exclusive: Obama-diplomacy and the Mindless Missive to Moscow

“All warfare is based upon deception” – Sun Tzu
Oh if only I thought for one minute Obama and his team were really following the tenets of Tzu, and being wily, sly folks who were borrowing a page from the Putin KGB misinformation playbook. I would sleep better if I thought Obama was offering a pullback of interceptors in Poland when in reality he was planning on putting an even better missile system right under the Kremlin’s nose. Alas, we do not have a President who cares about that pesky little line in his job description to protect the U.S. from foreign threats.
The revelation of the Obama letter to Russia offering to trade the deployment of a missile system that could protect our Eastern European allies, as well as round out our global detection capability – in essence throwing our allies under the bus – so that Russia would exert pressure on Iran to stop their nuclear program should demonstrate once and for all the danger we face from our own leadership.
And while Obama was again trying to sell his stimulus package and double talk his way out of the blowback from his Moscow missive, the Chinese government yesterday announced it would increase its defense budget by 14.9%. Russia has already established it plans to dramatically overhaul its military and is in the process of upgrading virtually every aspect of its offense as well as defense capabilities. And what is the U.S. doing? About to cut our defense budget, pull back our troops from the Middle East and now adding insult to injury – playing the weak child asking Mother Russia to handle a problem Obama is clearly incapable of or uninterested in addressing – Iran.
Obama, as I’ve written in several other pieces for FSM, just doesn’t let reality get in the way of his ideology. He is and will continue to be outplayed in global events.
First – asking Russia to stop Iran is tantamount to asking a parent to cut off its child. Newsflash Obama…Russia has armed, trained, inspired, assisted and protected Iran with conventional weapons and nuclear technology. So what part of Russia-Iran alliance don’t you get? Should we speak more slowly? And what Russia doesn’t provide, China, North Korea and probably General Electric supply. In case you missed the memo – China and North Korea aren’t our friends. But they are part of the nuclear club and the missile club. And they are probably the lucky ones not being friends of the U.S., give the way Obama will readily abandon our allies.
Second – Iran isn’t the only threat that faces Eastern Europe, so even if by some miracle the Tehran regime decided to play nice, Russia has demonstrated a total disregard for its former satellites. The missile shield should be deployed if for no other reason than to keep Putin et al honest and off balance.
Third – Iran has no intention of turning back on their nuclear promise. Consider a few years ago Tehran wasn’t even on our radar screen; now they are so under our skin and a major talking point from the UN to Washington to Tel Aviv. A nuclear Iran becomes a major player in the world. Someone needs to teach Obama about Middle East philosophy - the ability to project strength and power. If a man is judged by, er uh, well if a country is judged by the size of its missiles….well you get the point. So while we can all argue about the true payload/distance and terminal impact force of the Shahab 3 A, B or planned later models with advanced warhead technologies, Iran is committed to projecting power, and becoming a game changer in the region. A force to be dealt with.
Fourth – Russia is our enemy. Don’t like that, how about adversary? Competitor? In business all things are warfare. Russia is not our friend. Obama just doesn’t seem to get it.
The left – Neville Chamberlains at worst or Jimmy Carters at best – seem to be totally shocked when evil does bad things. Hello….evil? Enemies?
And we foolishly think if we play nice to the schoolyard bully he will become our friend. Stupid! When Russia plays the victim – they are intimidated by our proposed missile defense system and consider it a threat to their security – instead of apologizing or acquiescing – something the left is good at, but always wrapped in the mantel of peace – we should stand tall and firm.
If Russia is the peace loving nation it purports to be, then they wouldn’t object to smaller weaker nations trying to stay safe. If Russia is the peace loving nation, then why invade Georgia or place more weapons on the border. Our rookie president either doesn’t have the stomach for or brains to play hardball with Moscow. The Kremlin doublespeak straight out of the Cold War Playbook – using virtuous words to belie non virtuous actions needs to be unmasked for what it is. Russia is arming its allies worldwide; it is outplaying us in every domain from industrial espionage to energy to trade deals and yes potential military. And now Mr. Obama, you have forfeited any potential psychological advantage you had; Putin now knows the measure of the man you are and your powers of observation, intellect and ability to play chess with him.
And our approach – appeasement. Speak about weak kneed presidents….where is the 21st century Margaret Thatcher to put some backbone into our president? It’s embarrassing to watch a superpower beg. We’re a superpower – let’s act like one.
Projecting weakness to a world dominated by strong leaders who will protect their country’s sovereignty, have a very keenly defined view of their nations’ role in divvying up the global spoils, and are unashamed to assert influence or project power is an invitation to disaster.
Whether it is because Obama cares more about global opinion, is afraid to insult anyone or as a one world socialist devotee in deed if not word, he believes diplomacy and talk fests are the true way to Kumbaya.
It’s not the letter that worries me but the dangerous policy decisions behind the effort.
Then, of course, there is the issue about our friends. Would you trust U.S. foreign policy? At least you know not to trust Putin when you make a deal with him, but you also know what he stands for – his holy trinity – Russia, Gazprom and Putin. If you get that, then any business deal, eyes wide open – whether military alliance or gas pipelines can become a mutual benefit if you obey the trinity. With the U.S. you never know the impact of the caprice of ideology, elections or cowardice.
Obama’s quid pro quo – Moscow sits on Iran and we won’t deploy a missile defense program. The U.S. cannot play Russian roulette with Russia and use our allies as pawns – we don’t have enough! The U.S. needs all the friends it can get but not based upon weakness. For all the protestations of the West, most of Europe still slept better knowing that in the end, if their candle and moth game with Russia failed, the U.S. would be there to rescue them. I wouldn’t bet the farm on it with Obama in the White House. Would you trust him to defend you?
And in typical Obama politic speak, when the president was call out, he said that his recent letter to Moscow expressed his stance that reducing the threat of a nuclear Iran in turn reduces the need for a missile defense shield in Eastern Europe. Really? Of all the double speak President Obama has uttered, this tops the list of unbelievable. He retreated like a whipped puppy with his tail tucked ‘tween his legs. At least man up – you sent the letter. It failed…shocking!
What did Obama Expect?
On the assumption he thought Russia could as well as would do something…what is the “it” of the deal? What does Obama expect or want Medvedev to do (presuming Putin gives him permission)? Always light on specifics except when it comes to undermining terrorism efforts or our economic future or the middle class that BHO so glibly bandies about – we are left hanging. That’ s because the left just wants everyone to play nice together. The fact is there will always be bad guys and we need to be strong to withstand their efforts.
What did he want Medvedev to do? Fly to Tehran and grab the keys from the rocket launch system? Are you kidding? And the reality – Iran has no incentive to be weak. Russia has no incentive to be weak. It appears only Obama thinks projecting softness which the world interprets as weakness, is the right way to be a superpower.
What is also worrisome – as if ignoring the Moscow affair, emerging with British Prime Minister Brown, Obama announced the global economic issue at the meeting may be the start of a global new deal – Socialists of the world unite! Perhaps that is why the secret memo: sell our allies and nation out.
Let’s weaken our military while we are at it. After all it offends our comrades in Russia.
Conclusion
President Obama quite literally handed over global leadership to Russia and handed over the mantel to Medvedev and Putin. In his words and deeds, our president has weakened the nation, weakened our global stature and sent a loud message that our leaders don’t understand the global alliances against us, don’t appreciate that strength enhances negotiations and that we are the bumbling giant in Gulliver’s Travels.
Mr. President – consider Sun Tzu if you want peace prepare for war.
Alas, this latest victory for Moscow will not be the last. It is time for the loyal opposition to step forward and exert influence against the Obama policies that are weakening us from within and on the world stage before the U.S. becomes a third world nation.
