Exclusive: Jihad Comes to Central Arkansas

It began as a normal, non-descript Arkansas summer day. As the temperature crept up into the 90s, the unthinkable happened as Jihad found its way into Central Arkansas while her citizens scurried about their lives, seemingly unaware. On Monday, June 01, 2009, 23 year old William Long, a soldier who had just finished basic training, was remorselessly murdered outside the Army/Navy recruiting station at the Ashley Square Shopping Center in Little Rock, dying shortly after being taken to a Little Rock hospital. A second soldier, Quinton Ezeagwula, was wounded and remains in stable condition.

Although these callous murders were clearly inspired at least in part by the very ideology with which we are at war, radical Islam, in a display of flabbergastingly bad judgment the Commander-in-Chief of these dead and wounded American soldiers, Barack Obama, has not spoken one word of either outrage or compassion for the event. Why do that and spoil all the fun he’ll have at his Cairo speech?

But I digress.

Little Rock police quickly arrested their suspect, Abdul Hakim Mujahid Muhammad, 24, of Little Rock, also known as Carlos Bledsoe, whose description was a perfect fit to the terrorist profile. Muhammad, according to Little Rock Police Chief Stuart Thomas, “likely carried religious and political motives” in the shooting. Thomas also told KATV in Little Rock that the military was specifically targeted.

As I watched the horror unfold a mere 97 miles north of my farm house in South Arkansas, I waited for the standard reporting in the mainstream media that usually accompanies such a heinous attack, yet it never came. In an apparent hate crime, Muhammad viciously murdered one of our brave soldiers, a young man who had just made the decision to dedicate his life to serving his country. Muhammad’s “motives” were apparent in the KATV news story – a black Muslim who brutally murdered one and seriously wounded another because of their uniforms and dedication to serving this nation by keeping her secure from the very radical ideology that is personified in the likes of Abdul Hakim Mujahid Muhammad.

Murders are common in Little Rock, the center of Arkansas and its capitol. Little Rock police competently respond to and investigate murders every day, without the assistance of the FBI. However, in this case, Muhammad had been under FBI investigation prior to the murder. The profile fit. A young, recent convert to Islam, traveling to Yemen on a Somali passport. Inspection of his vehicle after the shooting, according to KATV, yielded more than 100 rounds of ammunition, an SKS assault rifle, two pistols and two military books.

The KATV report further quoted Chief Thompson as saying Little Rock police believe Muhammad acted alone and that he is not thought to be part of a “broader scheme.” What is noticeably absent from the report, however, is that often the Jihadist acts alone or within a small terror cell – their motives, plans and identities not known to others in their mosques or neighborhoods. They act just as Muhammad did – on his own, carrying out a small, seemingly isolated attack on the very institutions that hold this nation together. In this case, it was the U.S. military and two young men whose only crime was to be standing outside the recruiting center in broad daylight in a middle class neighborhood. That was all, apparently, that Muhammad needed to unload his assault rifle in a stream of gunfire filled with hate.

While Muhammad sits in jail in Little Rock, facing one capital murder charge and 15 counts of terrorist acts to which he has pled “not guilty,” even while saying that he would have killed more people had they been in the parking lot, the media is tripping over itself painting the Little Rock shooting as an “isolated incident,” much like they have each time in reporting the other crimes by Jihadist groups in Newburgh, New York; Ft. Dix, New Jersey and Goosecreek, South Carolina. While apparently being treated as a law enforcement case, it is an obvious act of an overall war, as the nation continues its War on Terror, a war against radical Islam. Two American soldiers were gunned down on a quiet Little Rock, Arkansas street, much in the manner used by the enemy in Iraq and Afghanistan.

And as a state mourns the tragedy of Jihad in Central Arkansas, the root cause of the murderous act is ignored: a radical, hate-filled belief system that is creeping its way into our prisons and into the country’s mosques and communities. Yes, the unthinkable, Jihad, has come to Central Arkansas. When will it come to your town?
