Exclusive: Movie Review – ‘The Third Jihad’
Pam Meister
Last Thursday evening, I had the opportunity to attend a screening in New York City of the movie The Third Jihad, produced by Raphael Shore, founder of the Clarion Fund, a non-profit, non-political media company educating the public about national security threats. Narrated by Dr. Zuhdi Jasser, founder of the American Islamic Forum for Democracy and an FSM contributing editor, The Third Jihad effectively defines the threat the United States and the entire Western world faces from radical Islam.
Scenes of burka-clad women being beaten in the street, young men being hanged in Iran for being homosexuals, and strident imams calling for Islam to take over the world are bad enough. Most informed people know that’s going on, but when it goes on halfway around the world, it can be easy enough to ignore when we have our own pressing problems to worry about.
Yet there is something to worry about. Believe it or not, Islamism and Jihad have arrived on our shores.
Viewers learn of a compound called Islamberg. A 70-acre compound located in upstate New York near the town of Deposit, it is a branch of Muslims of the Americas, Inc., formed in 1980 by Pakistani cleric Sheikh Mubarak Ali Gilani. Gilani has been linked to the radical group Jamaat ul-Fuqra, an organization that seeks to purify Islam through violence. Frightened neighbors in Deposit say they “can hear gunfire up there.”
Even more disturbing is the fact that there are somewhere in the neighborhood of 35 such compounds scattered about the United States, populated by many Muslim converts with violent backgrounds.
Yet another unsettling scene features the New York-based Islamic Thinkers Society in the streets, declaring that homosexuals will not be tolerated when Islam dominates the world. Either gays will change their ways or they will be dealt with – one way or another.
But the most chilling scenes in The Third Jihad are those showing radical Islam at work right here in America. From foiled attack plans by homegrown Jihadists (the Fort Dix Six, a plot to attack the PATH train running from New Jersey to New York, etc.) to the recent killing of one U.S. soldier and the wounding of another by a lone Muslim convert in Arkansas, Jihad is here. Ignoring it won’t make it go away.
After the movie, Frank Gaffney Jr., president of the Center for Security Policy, addressed the audience and answered questions. One of the more important points he touched upon was that while most Muslims worldwide are peaceful, those who subscribe to radicalism are following Islam as it is written. It is something he refers to as “Authoritative Islam" because it has never been challenged and in fact has been underscored by the hadiths, the Islamic schools of jurisprudence, scholarly consensus, and cultural practices.
Zuhdi Jasser calls for a reform of Islam from within. Until that happens, the rest of us must take the Islamists at their word. And never let our guard down.
