Congressional Hispanic Caucus pushing to include illegal immigrants
 
WHAT: The Democrats’ healthcare plan, HR 3200, could give benefits to illegal immigrants. An article Friday in Roll Call, said, “A CHC member, who requested not to be identified, said the group is urging Pelosi to ensure that everyone — including illegal immigrants — will be able to receive services as part of comprehensive reform…the Member said the CHC simply wants to make sure the bill — as drafted — doesn’t prohibit illegal immigrants from accessing care.”
 
Here are the facts:
 
  • Democrats intentionally left gaping loopholes in the healthcare bill that will allow illegal immigrants to receive taxpayer-funded benefits.
  • The bill contains no verification mechanism to ensure that illegal immigrants do not apply for benefits. In fact, Democrats rejected an amendment to close this loophole.
  • The bill leaves open the possibility that if one citizen family member is eligible for affordability credits, then the whole family including illegal immigrant family members, are also eligible for the credits.
 
Ranking Member Lamar Smith said, “The proposed healthcare scheme could force the American people to pay for the health care of illegal immigrants. This is another reason to oppose it.
 
OTHER FACTS ABOUT ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS AND HEALTHCARE: 
           
  • According to the latest research from the Pew Hispanic Center, 59 percent of all illegal immigrant adults lacked health insurance in 2007. These figures are dramatically higher than the 14 percent uninsured rate for U.S.-born adults.
  • The children of illegal immigrants are also uninsured at very high rates — 45 percent of their foreign-born children are uninsured.
  • One way to lower the number of uninsured would be to decrease the illegal immigrant population by enforcing immigration laws. Giving healthcare coverage to illegal immigrants will encourage more illegal immigration.
