Exclusive: Book Review: ‘Iran – The Green Movement’ by Slater Bakhtavar
Renee E. Taylor

Iran. The mention of the Islamic state brings to mind many images, whether it be vague memories of the nightly news drifting by while we studied for a high school exam – unaware that the country so far away would have such a dramatic impact on our daily lives – or current images of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad ranting anti-American, anti-Israeli propaganda on YouTube videos and on even our college campuses. Do we really comprehend what has transpired in the past 30 years? Perhaps, as you get ready to begin your day, sending the kids off to school and rushing to get yourself to work, you may ask yourself, “Why should I care about some faraway people in a faraway land led by some nut in a ‘Members Only’ jacket?” You see the words “the green movement” and think of the hybrid cars and florescent light bulbs – not of courageous men, their hope for democracy and a life free of Islamic oppression.
As Iran continues to move toward “going nuclear,” we need to care, we need to educate ourselves on this growing threat. Attorney, author and Family Security Matters’ contributing editor Slater Bakhtavar does just that in his latest book, Iran: The Green Movement. From the student uprisings in 1999 to the opposition to the current quest by Ahmadinejad to acquire nuclear weaponry, Bakhtavar gives a rare inside look into the nation, the people and their quest for freedom from Islamic tyranny you will not see on your nightly news.
Iran: The Green Movement is a critical resource not only for analysts and those whose interest in Middle Eastern events and policy leads them to the current events section of their local bookstore, but I highly recommend Iran: The Green Movement for every home school bookshelf, every public school library bookshelf. While we are going about our daily lives, concerned over the obvious – the prospect of nationalized health care, looming recession and what to have for dinner – the devastating possibilities from a nuclear Iran on not only our friends in Israel, but the United States itself, must not, cannot be ignored.
