Christmas and Hanukkah are just around the corner, and while Americans at home are planning the usual big celebrations, troops who are stationed overseas will be spending yet another holiday far away from family and friends.

There’s been a lot in the news about the deteriorating situation in Afghanistan and elsewhere, but our troops are doing the best they can with what they have. Morale is reported to be low, so what better way to let them know they haven’t been forgotten by the Americans they proudly serve than to donate to the Scott Vallely Soldiers’ Memorial Fund?

Named after PFC Scott Vallely, the fund’s purpose is to not only memorialize him and his service to our nation, but also to make contributions in his name to soldiers and their families. The Fund has a variety of projects, including making annual awards to members of our Armed Forces who distinguish themselves while serving our nation.

“Christmas Gifts for the Troops” is in its fifth year of providing holiday cheer and comfort from home to those troops who are stationed in combat areas. It’s one of the most successful projects of the Fund. Examples of gifts sent to our soldiers include CDs, DVDs, and their respective players; bestselling paperback books; calendars; weight lifting gloves; board games; candy; gourmet coffee and more.

The Fund has developed a database comprised of units and the individuals within them serving overseas, and determine via letters and e-mails received which items are the most needed and desired. Then, with the generous donations made to the Fund, volunteers make the necessary purchases and pack and ship them overseas. It’s also possible to request a gift box for that special someone.

While the volunteers who staff this worthy cause are willing and able, none of it is possible without you. The economy may be tough, but even just a few dollars could help make a soldier’s Christmas a little more special.

Please consider donating. For more information on this very worthy cause, please visit the Scott Vallely Soldiers’ Memorial Fund website by clicking here.
