Exclusive: The White House’s ‘Non-Religious’ Christmas?

In keeping with an ever-growing PC mentality amongst the liberal cocktail party set, the White House sought to keep the Christ out of Christmas.

Why not just celebrate “Winter,” like this school in Waterbury, Connecticut, and be done with the pretense?

In an attempt to carry out this theme, social secretary Desiree Rogers (who must be squirming over her role in the “party crasher” scandal) announced at a luncheon for former social secretaries that there was no intent to display the traditional White House crèche. The 18th century crèche was donated to the White House over 40 years ago. It was made in Naples, Italy of terra cotta and carved wood.

"We want it to be inclusive, diverse, representative of all Americans, celebratory, authentic," Rogers said. "So you sit and you say, O.K., how can we make this event," she paused, "Obama-tized."

“Obama-tized?” Is that like being Simonized?

The suggestion “drew an audible gasp from the tight-knit social secretary sisterhood.”

In the end, tradition won the day and the crèche is in its usual spot. But for how long?

Oh, and the White House has sent out its Christmas cards – sorry, “holiday” cards. “The cover, which is cream-colored with a thin maroon border, depicts a gold wreath encircling a gold presidential coat of arms. Moving away from a style favoured by the previous president, George W Bush, there is no biblical passage or mention of Christmas in the greeting.” Well, some traditions remain sacrosanct, as the tradition of “moving away” from the previous administration continues.

Recall, too, that the guest list for the traditional Hanukkah party was cut from 800 to 400 in a bid to rein in costs, even as the administration continues its plans to spend our way out of the recession and the White House plans on “50,000 guests, 28 parties and open houses, a couple hundred thousand holiday cards and untold quantities of cookies, cakes, brownies, truffles and the like to feed the Obamas' holiday throng.”

At this reception on December 4th, “Dinner included prime rib, turkey with stuffing and crab legs, along with a selection of fresh vegetables and baby potatoes.” What, no turkey roll, canned cranberry sauce, packaged gravy, green bean casserole and frozen pumpkin pie?

Doesn’t sound like much cost cutting is going on to me.

We should be thankful, however, that there isn’t a Christmas tree in the White House decorated with condoms.

Christmas is Christmas. Sure, there is a commercial aspect to the holiday, and many non-Christians treat it as a secular gift-giving festival (as my Hindu friend Fal’s family does). In fact, a 2004 poll showed 96 percent of Americans saying they celebrated Christmas, and 87 percent believed that it’s okay for nativity scenes to appear on public property. It’s hard to believe that the numbers have changed very much in the past five years. Why would the White House want to break with tradition in order to appease approximately 4 percent of the nation’s 300 million people?

But then, we recently discovered that we are one of the world’s largest Muslim nations. Times change.
