You Can’t Make This Stuff Up!

Whenever you think general incompetence by those who purport to serve by the consent of the governed can’t get any worse, think again:
“Big Apple Targets Salt Content In Food” (WCBSTV.com, 1/11/10)
NEW YORK (CBS) ― City health officials have battled trans fat and high-calorie fast food. Now, they're taking on salt.
The health department planned to release on Monday draft guidelines suggesting the maximum amount of salt that should be in a wide variety of manufactured and packaged foods.
The recommendations call for sizable reductions in the sodium content of many products, from a 20 percent drop in peanut butter to a 40 percent decline in canned vegetables.
Unlike the city's recent ban on trans fat in restaurant food or rules implemented last year requiring chain restaurants to post calorie information on their menus, this initiative is purely voluntary.
But even though there will be no penalties for companies that ignore the guidelines, health officials say they think some manufacturers may be motivated to make changes.
"They all fully recognize that sodium is a major health problem that they need to address," said the city's health commissioner, Dr. Thomas Farley.
Back in 2008, six city councils in the UK decided that taxpayer money was needed to create and distribute salt shakers with fewer holes to chip shops in an effort to control citizens’ salt intake. Is this really what government is for – to save us from ourselves?
New York City health officials may start out with a “voluntary” initiative, but it’s likely a matter of time that they demand that food manufacturers follow their guidelines if they want to sell it in NYC. And just as guidelines in states that purchase large quantities of textbooks affect the content of books offered nationwide, it’s also only a matter of time before “what’s good for New York City” becomes “what’s good for America.” Thanks, but if we wanted to live under the strictures of Mike Bloomberg, we’d move to New York City.
“In Hasan case, superiors ignored their own worries” (Associated Press, 1/11/10)
WASHINGTON (AP) – A Defense Department review of the shooting rampage at Fort Hood, Texas, has found the doctors overseeing Maj. Nidal Hasan's medical training repeatedly voiced concerns over his strident views on Islam and his inappropriate behavior, yet continued to give him positive performance evaluations that kept him moving through the ranks.
The picture emerging from the review ordered by Defense Secretary Robert Gates is one of supervisors who failed to heed their own warnings about an officer ill-suited to be an Army psychiatrist, according to information gathered during the internal Pentagon investigation and obtained by The Associated Press. The review has not been publicly released.
Hasan, 39, is accused of murdering 13 people on Nov. 5 at Fort Hood, the worst killing spree on a U.S. military base.
What remains unclear is why Hasan would be advanced in spite of all the worries over his competence. That is likely to be the subject of a more detailed accounting by the department. Recent statistics show the Army rarely blocks junior officers from promotion, especially in the medical corps.
“What remains unclear is why Hasan would be advance in spite of all the worries over his competence.” Here’s a clue: America has become so worried about political correctness and the potential lawsuits that could crop up if any minority is not promoted (remember the New Haven firefighters case?) that Maj. Hasan was bumped up the ladder of success, even though he clearly did not belong there. That this PC-mania has permeated the very institutions sworn to keep all Americans safe is chilling.
“TSA nominee: Global warming deserves parity with war on terror” (HotAir.com 1/11/10)
TSA nominee Errol Southers:
“Due to connectivity that we have with countries such as Israel, France — countries that are seen by groups, by al Qaeda, as infidels or anti-Islamic — by the true nature of our alliance with them means that we subject to be attacked as well. I do think, however, it deserves to perhaps have some parity with global warming, with education, with the economy, but national security is always going to supercede everything else. I don’t think you can have all of those other entities flourish in a state where the security is not felt to be confident, comfortable, and intact.”
Er – global warming is just as important as the threat we face from jihad? Then again, Southers should be a shoo-in for the job, considering the administration is diverting intelligence assets to climate research. Why waste money? Just ask the folks in states like Florida and Texas how that global warming is working out for them.
New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Health Czar Thomas Farley have declared war on sugar, cigarettes, trans-fats, calorie counts . . . and now salt.
The Bloomberg administration is pursuing a sweeping sodium reduction campaign that makes NYC residents test subjects and pressures food companies to drastically change their products regardless of the desires of consumers. Worse yet, this bureaucratic agenda is not based on sound science, but on political science and alarmism.
Sign the petition today and save NYC's incredible and diverse cuisine and protect your right to make your own food choices.
