Exclusive: Legislators Realizing National Security is Not a Partisan Issue

As al Qaeda continues to try to get WMD to use against the United States, the U.S. is woefully unprepared to protect its citizens against such an attack, according to a report by a bipartisan panel.

"Nearly a decade after September 11, 2001, one year after our original report, and one month after the Christmas Day bombing attempt, the United States is failing to address several urgent threats, especially bioterrorism," said former senator Bob Graham, chair of the Commission on the Prevention of Weapons of Mass Destruction Proliferation and Terrorism.

A Harvard study also “leaves little doubt that Al Qaeda operatives would not hesitate to launch attacks that could kill tens or even hundreds of thousands of Americans if they could pull off such an attack.”

Al Qaeda and its compatriots in jihad continue their assault on freedom – with their most recent success being the bombing of three hotels in Baghdad, killing 36 people, in a continued effort to weaken the U.S.-backed Shiite government in Iraq. The umbrella organization in Iraq that includes al Qaeda, the Islamic State of Iraq, says hotels are “legitimate targets.”

Despite these serious concerns about national security, only eight paragraphs out of 110 were devoted to security concerns during this week’s State of the Union Address.

But not all government representatives are dropping the ball.

Earlier this week, six senators sent a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder are demanding that the administration reverse its decision to try Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and four other Gitmo detainees in New York City, and instead use military tribunals.

“Today, those who subscribe to the same violent ideology as Khalid Sheikh Mohammed continue to plan and execute attacks against innocent civilians all over the world. It is not in our national interest to provide them further publicity or additional advantage.

[…]

“Such a trial would almost certainly become a recruitment and radicalization tool for those who wish us harm.”

The letter was signed by Sens. John McCain (R-AZ), Joe Lieberman (I-CT.), Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Blanche Lincoln (D-AK.), Susan Collins (R-ME) and Jim Webb (D-VA), showing that when it comes to national security efforts, a strong bipartisan effort is necessary.

Perhaps the jihad attack at Fort Hood and the thwarted attempt to bomb an airliner over Detroit on Christmas Day have awakened Americans to the fact that the jihadist threat continues to hang over our heads like the sword of Damocles. Sixty-four percent believe that KSM and his cronies should be tried in a military tribunal, and nearly 80 percent support the death penalty if a guilty verdict is pronounced.

It is this concern that helped sweep Scott Brown to victory in Massachusetts last week. When it came to national security issues, Brown came in at 67 percent, compared to 29 percent for his opponent, Martha Coakley. During a campaign appearance, Brown said,

“Our Constitution and laws exist to protect this nation. They do not grant rights and privileges to enemies in wartime. In dealing with terrorists, our tax dollars should pay for weapons to stop them, not lawyers to defend them."

One of the main roles of our government is to “provide for the common defense…and secure the blessings of liberty for ourselves and our prosperity.” Not to take over the private sector and redistribute the wealth. The American people seem to understand that.

Some of our government officials get it. Here’s hoping the rest will figure it out sooner rather than later.

The time has come for those who truly love our freedoms purchased in blood over the centuries to recognize that we are now led by a President who has bought into political correctness about the jihadists (suicide terrorists and politicals alike) who desire to have our constitution replaced by an Islamic Republic. The Islamist terrorists are not criminals. They are our mortal enemies. Likewise his background does not lend itself to an understanding of strategic threats. He tries to please everyone and is sinking us into an abyss of debt and debilitation as a free country.
