Exclusive: Small Town America Transformed By Somali Migrants

Newly arrived Somali immigrants have transformed small towns and cities throughout the United States into tuulas (Somali villages).
 
The process is underway in such places as Lewiston, Maine; Shelbyville, Tennessee, St. Cloud, Minnesota, Clarkston,Georgia, and Jamestown, North Dakota.
 
The Jamestown Sun reports that 400 Somalis have applied for public housing in the past four months.
 
The Somali immigrants in Garden City, Kansas and nearby small towns have created the Somali Community Center of Southwest Kansas in order to tap into public welfare programs. Within this section of the heartland, white Christians have become the minority.
 
In East San Diego, the newly arrived Somalis have created a Little Mogadishu. The streets are lined with Somali stores, shops, and mosques. In the midst of this ethnic enclave stands the Iftin Charter School, where K-8 students are introduced to Arabic. 99% of the student population is Somali; Arabs constitute the remaining 1%.
 
The American Somalis now display the highest unemployment and poverty rates in the country. They also remain the least educated. According to Andrew Liepman, the deputy director of intelligence at the National Counterterrorism Center, Somali-Americans face "greater insularity compared to other, more integrated Muslim immigrant communities, [which] has aggravated the challenge of assimilation for their children."
 
This problem is crystallized by the present situation is Lewiston, Maine, where African Muslims, many from the Bantu tribe, began arriving in 2001 at the rate of 100 a month.
 
Mohammed Maye, the president of the African Community and Refugee Center in Clarkston, Georgia posted a map of Lewiston on the wall of his office. “Go to Maine,” he advised the Somali immigrants. Abdullahi Abdullahi, the president of the Somali Community Development Organization in Clarkston, upheld this advice by telling his fellow countrymen that, unlike Georgia, Maine has terribly cold winters, but “the welfare system is better.”
 
Lewiston, indeed, was better. The small town in Maine with a population of 30,000 provided welfare to anyone in need, with the state picking up half the tab. Recipients, including the Muslim refugees, were allowed a generous five years of assistance before their benefits became terminated, and extensions for several additional years on the public dole were not difficult to obtain. Single parents could stay on welfare and go to college.
 
Public housing was also available, although, with the influx of Somalis, the housing projects became packed to capacity. Many of the new project dwellers were single Somali mothers with large broods of children. Those who are unable to obtain public housing were handed Section 8 vouchers, which the federal government provided to subsidize their rent in private apartments. The northern city with its frigid climate became welfare heaven for the arrivals from the vast desert areas of northern Africa.
 
The newcomers have shown scant interest in securing employment. When Renee Bernier, the president of the Lewiston city council, offered to hire 30 Somalis at the rate of $8 to $10 an hour to hold warning signs at construction sites, few displayed interest. The handful, who did apply, said that they were only willing to work between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
 
The Somali population of Lewiston now exceeds 40,000.

Reap what you sow. Even after knowing full well the habits and anti-western culture of the "un-assimilatbale" Muslim immigrant from a variety of Islamic nations and its horrific side affects documented in other western nations (UK, Sweden, etc etc) we in America have chosen ignore, promote Muslim immigration and allow the destruction of our national values and culture and the gradual decay and demise of our great nation. The blame is on both the democrat and republican parties and ALL of our politicians at all levels for ignoring and facilitating this eventual catastrophy.

I think you better check your population number at the bottom of your article. The entire population of Lewiston does not exceed 40,000 people as you stated earlier in your article. I think you intended to say that the Somali population now has reached 4000. Which is the real number since I live in the area have seen the immigration first hand.

The Obama administration probably can help create some government programs to help bring these people more into the mainstream.

As a Jew, I support the demographic changes going on in this country and cannot see any reason why someone would be against it beyond racism.

It's time to limit Islamic immigration, and those who are allowed to come in should have a trade. Letting in single mothers with a large number of children, to be fed, housed and educated, is unacceptable and unaffordable! We must be much more careful and tougher with our immigration standards. We must clean house at the 2010 and 1012 elections, and put people in who have common sense!

While it appears the Somalis are here legally, they are not unlike the illegal immigrants. Cowards!! to afraid to work/fight for change in their native or home countries. Choosing instead to come here, bankrupt our systems and way of life, turning the US into the same third world cesspool they came from. And guess what? we're electing the politicians who are allowing this to happen. Didn't Abe Lincoln say that when the government fails the people it's time for the people to revolt. If it's not time it's getting close

The government cannot pay for any programs it creates. The government has no resources save what it takes from it's productive citizens. You and I will pay for it with our tax dollars. In fact, our government is broke.

You support demographic changes that will endanger your future existence as a Jew? The Somalis are Muslim. Need I remind you who Muslims hate most intensely? The white, gentile United States, despite our flaws, has been the safest country for Jews to live and thrive in the history of the world.....and yet, you want to change it into something else which will imperil your existence.

Also, W. Rosencratz, do you support massive Muslim immigration into Israel? If you support massive demographic changes in the United States, then surely you must support massive demographic changes in Israel. If you do not support massive demographic changes in Israel then you must retract your charge that Americans opposed to Somali immigration to this country are racist.

100% wrong article, but I suspect that the author know it.
Estimate in Lewiston are that 4,000 may be Somali - that is 1/10 of the amount the author lied about!
The refugees are being credited with SAVING the city from ruin...any of you who have been to those old Maine cities knows they were falling apart before! Here's part of a recent article:
"Lewiston's sudden jolt is reflected even in enrollment at local universities. Although University of Maine enrollment has dropped systemwide since 2002, the student population at its Lewiston campus jumped 16 percent between 2002 and 2007. And Andover College, which opened a campus in Lewiston in 2004, had to start expanding almost immediately to accommodate a boom in applications. Enrollment doubled in two years. The reason? "Young people didn't want to go to a place that's all white," says Morrison. Practically everyone in Lewiston credits the Somalis' discovery of their town with much of its newfound success. "It's been an absolute blessing in many ways," says Badeau. "Just to have an infusion of diversity, an infusion of culture and of youth. Cultural diversity was the missing piece." The question is whether the rest of Maine—and other states like it—can find their own missing pieces."

This is the inevitable result of the hijacking of education by government. Public schools deliberately foster ignorance and perpetuate the myth of equality. Schools are a powerful communtity organization that could be used to promote the will of the community. Unfortunately, we've handed this power over to the state. Now schools are used to suppress local culture, brainwash our children into becoming our political adversaries, and to impoverish us with excessive taxation.

how soon have we all forgotten our immigration status. This is a country founded by immigrants. Should language and culture be the distinction of citizenship. How many european settlers knew how to speak the native language of the land at that time? What happened to helping your worldly neighbors in need? remember a holiday called "thanksgiving"? Many somali people that come here are highly educated and intelligent people, many doctors and teachers are forced to start over and become cab drivers and factory workers. it is shameful to judge people you know nothing about. Facts and numbers only provide narrow opinions. How bad do you think it has to get for a culture to pack up and leave everything they own and know? pretty bad. please do yourself a facor and take time to understand the people around you.

I live in Columbus, Oh and I see first hand just how bad this somalian problem has gotten....I lived in an apartment that also housed many somali immigrants and I came to notice literally hardly any of them work.... I worked second shift and would be leaving at 1:30 as ten of them are outside having a bbq on a monday! They constantly were getting new furniture, there would be old (but farely new) furniture by the dumpster every week! They always want something for free from where I work no matter what the cost. To my understanding the funds and everything we are giving these people is going to waste, they obviously do not appreciate this country or else they would get a job, provide for there family and try not to live and eat for free for 5 years....but mostly to blame would be our government...why would we as a nation in trillions of dollars in debt just let people mooch off the system like this without any job requirements or anything. The government instead of trying to transition and give these immigrants a sense of what america is (well should be) about and showing them that the only way to live is to better yourself and your work reflects your lifestyle, giving them the sense that hard work is rewarding, they are saying here is free, free, help, and free.....therefore why should they think "o i need to get a job" when they are perfectly content with all the help and free stuff they get, its completely ridiculous. I was born here my parents were born here there parents were born here and so on since the american colonization and I cant get any money for college, literally, I have one year left and no funds to finish, I work my a$$ off 6 days a week and can barely manage to get by, and I know that I am in a way better position than most other Americans out there who are completely homeless and living on the streets, some even being our own veterans, yet were going to give 5 years of free stuff to people who arent even from this country.....think about it .....its crazy! Dont get me wrong I very much believe that immigration into this country is ok, as long as regulations and guidelines are provided and none of them can take advantage of the system. I am not racist, I am not discriminating, I am simply stating what I see, what I know(or think I know), and how I feel about this situation.
