Washington DC, June 12, 2011

On Tuesday June 14, 2011 the Third summit of the Transatlantic Legislative/Parliamentary Group on Counter Terrorism (TAG) will be held on Capitol Hill and attended by members of the US Congress and of the European Parliament. TAG was launched in 2008 by US Rep Sue Myrick and MEP Jaime Mayor Oreja (ES), Vice-President of the EPP Group, Responsible for Political Strategy and European Ideas Network. The two lawmakers are the co-chairs of the transatlantic caucus since. The group has appointed in 2009 two secretaries generals, Guillermo Martinez Casan in Brussels and Dr Walid Phares in Washington DC.

In this third summit, TAG's agenda will focus on two major issues, Terrorism after Bin Laden and the evolution of the Arab Spring. After the opening remarks by Mayor Oreja and Myrick, Dr Phares will deliver the annual report.

The European delegation will include as speakers: Burkhard Balz (Denmark), Member of the EP Committee on 'Economic and Monetary Affairs'; Tunne Kelam (Estonia), member of the Delegation for Relation with US; Andrey Kovatechev (Bulgaria), Head of Bulgarian EPP Delegation; Antonio Lopez Isturiz (Spain), Secretary General of the European People's Party, Mario Mauro (Italy), Head of the Italian Delegation; Jan Olbrycht, (Poland); Godelieve Quisthooudt Rowohl, (Denmark), Chairwoman of the Working Group on 'Transatlantic Relation'; Tokia Saifi (France), Chair of the Committee on Political Affairs, Security and Human Rights of the Euro-Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly.

The US speakers will include Sen. Richard Burr (R-North Carolina); Rep Kay Granger (R-Texas) TAG Founder; Rep Allen WEST (R-Florida); Rep Dan   BURTON (R-Indiana); Rep Jeff DUNCAN (R-South Carolina); Rep Frank WOLF (R-Virginia). Also invited: Rep Trent Franks (R- Arizona); Rep Ed Royce (R-California); Rep Mac Thornberry (R-Texas); Rep. Dan Burton (R - Indiana); Rep. Ted Poe (R - Texas); Rep. Albio Sires (D - New Jersey); Former Rep Bud Cramer (D-Alabama)

As special guests, leaders of Middle East democracy NGOs will also speak at a session dedicated to the ongoing uprisings in the region. They include representatives from Egyptian liberals, Copts, Cedars Revolution, Syrian democracy movement, Southern Sudan and northern Sudan democracy NGOs, and Iraqi women's movement. A briefing on Iran will take place at a special session.

According to TAG officials, the transatlantic group is focusing on two strategic tracks in order to enable the two most powerful legislative assemblies of the free world to help democracies move forward in the fight against the Jihadi threat and in insuring a success to the ongoing changes in the region. "The killing of Bin Laden is a historic benchmark but not the end of the conflict with the Terror forces," said a TAG official. He added: "lawmakers in the US and in Europe want their executives and NATO to insure civil societies and democracy forces emerge as the main winners of the ongoing unrest."
