Quote of the Day - July 20, 2011

by FSM: QUOTE OF THE DAY July 20, 2011

“Mama exhorted her children at every opportunity to 'jump at the sun.' We might not land on the sun, but at least we would get off the ground.”

- Zora Neale Hurston (1891 – 1960), folklorist, poet and novelist.

The author of the quote

Hurston’s mother Lucy, a schoolteacher, died when she was a young girl, and her widower father banned her from reading novels. Zora Neale Hurston opposed Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal and in 1952 supported the presidential campaign by Republican senator, Robert A. Taft. She was an integral part of the Harlem Renaissance; the time when she fell out with her former associate, poet Langston Hughes, is said to have marked the end of that cultural epoch. Hurston died in poverty and obscurity. She was buried in an unmarked grave in a segregated cemetery in Florida.

Ironically, it was because of Alice Walker, a figure who is firmly a part of the American left, that Hurston – the Republican – was restored to her rightful place in America’s cultural history. Now, most of Zora Neale Hurston’s books are back in print.
