BREAKING NEWS: ‘I Am The Surge’ Debuts at Democrat Convention

August 27, 2008

Greetings from Denver, Colorado. David Bellavia and I are at the Democratic National Convention informing delegates and the media about the dramatic success we witnessed in Iraq, and the need for victory on all fronts of the Global War on Terrorism.

Today we released a new television advertisement as part of our grassroots and media effort to educate the American public about the success of the surge in Iraq. The ad
--"I am the Surge"--hits airwaves tomorrow and will run in the Denver media market this week, Minneapolis next week, and in Ohio, Michigan, Virginia, and Colorado in the weeks to come. Over $1 million will be dedicated to the message of this ad.

The thirty-second spot features three VFF members--all of which were part of the Surge--who can personally attest to success in Iraq; all three asking Senator Obama--point blank--to support their success, and the success of all troops, by supporting the bi-partisan resolution introduced by Senators Joe Lieberman and Lindsey Graham recognizing the success of the Surge and expressing gratitude to the men and women who made it possible as soon as the Senate returns from its five week vacation. (Senate Resolution 636, introduced July 31, 2008).

As members of the largest Iraq and Afghanistan veterans organization in the country, we cannot stand by and let the incredible progress of our troops go unnoticed by the American public and lawmakers from either side of the aisle. It is essential that our top legislators--regardless of party--understand the importance of victory in Iraq and Afghanistan, the consequences of defeat, and the success of the surge in Iraq.

Senator Obama has said that he would still oppose the Surge in Iraq if given another opportunity, and has pointed to every outside factor--but the Surge--to explain improvements in Iraq. We hope he will listen to the veterans who have served there and support this important resolution for the sake of the troops.
As the ad mentions, please call Senator Obama’s office today (202-224-2854) and ask him to support our troops by supporting Senate Resolution 636.
It’s not enough to say you "support the troops." Now is the time to demonstrate--in the Senate and across the country--that supporting the troops means recognizing, honoring, and supporting their incredible success.
