Costco Complete ID Alternatives and Competitors

Last Updated on August 8, 2023

There are a lot of great identity theft protection products and services in the market today. Each has their pros and cons, however. In this article I’ll be reviewing Costco’s Complete ID and how it compares to competitors.

I must say, however, that ultimately, when it comes down to the best of all identity theft protection services out there, Aura is the one I like most.

In our testing, Aura offers the most value for the money for the most powerful monitoring

Costco Complete ID was never a top contender, nevertheless, I want to provide you with a fair and balanced review of my experience using this platform, especially if you’re a Costco member and like being loyal to the brand.

Top Complete ID Alternatives & Competitors

Aura

With every tier of service including the same full range of monitoring and additional services, Aura comes at an extremely low cost, offering the maximum amount of theft insurance available on the market.

Every adult gets $1 million – from $2 million in coverage on the couples plan to a maximum of $5 million on the family plan).

Our testing revealed they produce the fastest and best results in terms of alerts – 15 unique dark web alerts and 35 in total, within minutes. And, their white glove concierge customer support is quick, knowledgeable, and available any time of the day or night, every day of the year (on all plans).

Aura Pros

Aura monitors a comprehensive list of assets, including 401(k), investment, vehicle, and home title monitoring, and much more.

You want to know as quickly as possible if you’ve suffered a breach or theft so you can mitigate the consequent harm – Aura outshines every other service in this respect with 35 alerts in total and 15 unique dark web alerts. Within minutes.

Then, you want someone reliable to help you through the next steps. Aura’s customer support is there 24/7/365, offering white glove concierge support (across all plans), with specialists who have 7 years or more experience in ID theft resolution.

Not to mention that price is locked in for life once you’ve signed up.

As for the theft insurance, no other service offers as much per adult and across all plans.

Finally, the parental control software that’s included, Circle, can be reassuring if you have children.

Aura Cons

There’s not a lot to complain about Aura. The VPN isn’t particularly robust and the anti-virus isn’t much better.

But they’re an added layer of protection and you can always boost them with something else if you’re so inclined.

Identity Guard

Identity Guard has operated in the identity theft protection industry for almost 20 years, and have pretty much led the pack as one of the most trusted services on the market. As Aura’s predecessor, it offers much the same in terms of accurate monitoring and speedy alerts.

Identity Guard also covers a lot of features, but only at the most expensive tier – the Ultra plan.

Identity Guard Pros

As long as you’re on the Ultra plan, the breadth of monitoring is outstanding, including white glove resolution concierge support, social media insights report, credit and debit card and account monitoring, 401(k) and investment account monitoring, criminal and sex offender registry monitoring, USPS address change monitoring, and home title monitoring.

And, they match the top number of alerts in our tests – 35 alerts total and 15 unique dark web alerts – all within 2 minutes flat. They share the same parent company as Aura and use the same software after all.

Their customer support is solid and their agents are extremely experienced and they are quick to answer all questions.

Identity Guard Cons

The main con here is that Identity Guard has only one plan that shines – again, that’s the Ultra plan. Other plans? Not so much.

In fact, the Value plan offers only the $1 million identity theft insurance, access to the customer care team, risk management, data breach, dark web, and high risk transaction monitoring, plus the safe browsing tool. No home title monitoring, etc.

The Total plan doesn’t really offer all that much more either – just bank account monitoring and the added 1-bureau credit score and 3-bureau monitoring. Also, it’s more expensive.

While their customer service is good, their hours aren’t great – Mon-Fri from 8 a.m. – 11 p.m., EST and Saturdays from 9 a.m. – 6 p.m., EST. Closed on Sundays.

They only have a Family plan (with quite a hefty markup in price), and no couples plan.

The Family plan covers 5 adults and an unlimited number of children, as long as the children live under the same roof. (Not always practical if, for example, you have a child at college.).

Identity Guard is currently offering a 40% discount on the annual payments (across all plans) and you get 33% off using our affiliate link. The fact that the price you pay today remains the same for life is a pro too. You can also get a 60-day money-back guarantee if you sign up on any of the annual plans.

IdentityForce

IdentityForce used to be an easy-on-the-pocket option for those who couldn’t afford the bigger boys in the market, but this is no longer the case.

With IdentityForce you get services such as, advanced fraud monitoring, change of address monitoring, court records monitoring, dark web monitoring and data analysis, sex offender monitoring, payday loan monitoring, and bank and credit card monitoring.

IdentityForce Pros

IdentityForce offers a fairly good range of monitoring tools, covering most of the basics.

Their scanning is really accurate and quick – 1 minute. IdentityForce popped up 19 dark web alerts and 7 unique dark web alerts in our tests.

If you have kids, their Childwatch protection service is nice to have too. While it’s added automatically to the Family plan, you can purchase it per child on your individual plan too (something single parents will be happy to know.)

Childwatch monitors your child’s credit (which they shouldn’t have yet, by the way), social media (for things such as cyberbullying and harassment), and full identity.

IdentityForce Cons

IdentityForce’s customer support is limited to 8 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. (EST), 7 days a week. Yes, this includes weekends, but the hours aren’t great if you need to handle a problem after 5:30 p.m.

Also, home title and investment and 401(k) monitoring are not covered.

For what you get, it feels like you’re being overcharged, especially if you opt for 3-bureau credit monitoring (which is a far better option). Aura’s $12/month by comparison, far outstrips theirs (see the table below).

There is no couples plan, so you need to get an additional individual membership for your spouse. This makes it even more expensive.

Incidentally, the pricing on their website is a bit strange. I had to contact them to understand why there are two prices for UltraSecure, but only one for UltraSecure & Credit. The prices below explain this.

IDShield

IDShield offers a surprisingly good range of coverage. They’re just a bit on the expensive side for what you get.

Their options and performance are comparable to many middle tier plans of average identity theft protection services, including data breach and dark web monitoring, Social Security number monitoring, social media monitoring, credit monitoring, bank account monitoring, payday loan monitoring, and reputation and privacy management (see below for further detail on this.).

IDShield Pros

IDShield came back with alerts surprisingly quickly in our testing – within 24 hours – which is quicker than many other alternatives. They provided 24 alerts in total, and 8 unique dark web alerts.

IDShield offers the services of in-house private investigators who help you recover your identity – handy if you’d like to know who stole your identity in the first place. Other than that, they operate much like identity restoration specialists of other services.

Also unusual with this service is what they term “reputation and privacy management” consultation and restoration specialists. They help you to review your social media accounts for old posts/photos, and make requests on your behalf to keep your information off data broker websites.

IDShield Cons

If you have 401(k) and investments, or need home title monitoring, you’re out of luck – IDShield doesn’t monitor that.

Their customer support is limited to between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. While they do have 24/7 emergency support, they can’t do much to help you with anything serious as this is just a skeleton crew with limited access to resources reserved for office hours.

If you have children, note that they are only covered on the family plan up to age 18. IDShield also doesn’t offer any parental controls or tools.

There are no discounts, promo codes or free trials.
